Description: This training provides information aimed to increase the knowledge, awareness, sensitivity, and competence of professionals of all levels of understanding of LGBTQ youth. Based in research from Alfred Kinsey, Lisa Diamond, the Family Acceptance Project, and experiences as a professional within the Child Welfare System, this training begins with terms and definitions and a discussion of risk factors for substance use and criminal involvement, but quickly moves into practical applications of information learned and tips for professionals to improve interactions with LGBTQ youth and their families. This training will discuss current and best practices regarding safety and confidentiality, clinical treatment, and housing and placement concerns of LGBTQ youth in out of home care. Participants are encouraged to explore their own biases, build their knowledge and understanding, and increase empathy and compassionate care for LGBTQ youth. The training concludes with information about local and web-based resources for professionals, youth, and their families.
